Ford Transit Custom PHEV debuts in UK

No word yet on an Australian arrival, however commercial vehicle buyers in Europe and the UK might soon have a plug-in hybrid version of the Ford Transit Custom to test-drive.

Unveiled at a low carbon vehicle event in the UK this week, the Transit Custom PHEV van will now be trialed for 12-months before entering production in 2019.

Ford tell us the van’s advanced hybrid system provides a zero-emission electric drive range in excess of 50 kilometres.

A 1.0 litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine then kicks in to keep the batteries charged and the Transit Custom on the move.

Ford estimates the van will have a range of about 500 kilometres from a tank of fuel, and the Transit Custom PHEV can be recharged from a standard electricity supply.

“For more than 50 years businesses have relied on Ford Transit to get the job done, and we are determined to maintain that tradition as we move into the electric age,” said Mark Harvey, Director, urban electrified van programme, Ford of Europe.

“Seeing the PHEV Transits on the road is an exciting milestone, and we look forward to teaming up with our London partners and customers to explore how these vans can reduce emissions and operator costs in the city.”

We will keep you updated with further info on the plug-in hybrid Ford van as additional info comes to hand.
