The changes being brought to Mitsubishi following last year’s take-over by Nissan are starting to come with reports the manufacturers will build the next-generation Navara/Triton utes together.
Nissan has the controlling interest in Mitsubishi and is looking to cut costs, one of the ways savings could be made would be to share development and production costs of the next-gen Thai-built ute/pick-up.
Mitsubishi COO, Trevor Mann, being quoted by Reuters as saying his brand will most likely take the lead on the new-gen ute.
“If you look at our cost performance in that region, we are the benchmark within the alliance,”
“Our four-by-four technology, our cost base on pickups is better than Nissan’s.”
Reuters reports a common architecture between the two brands will be introduced.
This would allow the Mitsubishi factory in Thailand to specialise in utes/pickups while the Nissan plant would build cars and SUVs.
The current Navara and Triton models aren’t due for replacement before 2022.
