myChevrolet phone app and other tech comes online

Buyers of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will have access to some new technology that should make towing a trailer easier and safer.

Announced this morning by General Motors in the U.S., there’s no confirmation yet of when we might see the systems in Australia.

Never the less, the systems were developed after GM asked Silverado buyers about their needs and wants.

They include a new phone app called ‘myChevrolet’ that includes some clever aids such as a step-by-step pre-trip checklist.

There’s also a glossary of towing terms and a function that allows drivers to conduct a trailer light test…without the help of a second person.

That means you can hook-up your trailer and then make sure your brake lights are working without the need to have someone at the back of the trailer ready to give you the thumbs up (or sometimes down).

GM also introducing onto the 2019 Chevy Silverado a ‘Trailering Label’, they say this will take the guesswork out of hooking up a large/heavy trailer.

The label clearly lists info such as tare weight, GVM and GCM weight ratings.

There’s also a Trailering Camera Package to help you more easily hook-up the trailer (as seen below).

A wireless trailer tyre pressure monitoring system that displays trailer tyre pressure and tyre heat on the truck’s infotainment screen is also coming online.

While you can also stop thieves with a Trailer Theft Alert function that will activate the truck’s lights and horn if the harness of the trailer attached to the truck is disconnected.

If you’re away from your Silverado (far enough to not hear the horn), then the app can even alert you via SMS, email etc. if your trailer is uncoupled.

“Ultimately, these technologies serve to eliminate common pain points of towing and help provide customers with a less stressful experience while trailering.”

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado goes on sale in the U.S. a little later in the year, we’ll let you know if/when we will see the tech on trucks imported into Australia.
