Performax converted GM trucks recalled

A recall of 145 GM pick-up trucks imported and converted by Performax International is underway after a possible airbag fault was identified.

The vehicles affected include 2014–2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 pick-up trucks, as well as 2014–2017 GMC Sierra 2500 pick-ups.

All of the affected vehicles were sold between the 25^th of May 2015 and the 28^th of October 2016.

The recall is being overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The ACCC recall notice advises that sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) in these vehicles, which controls airbag and pre-tensioner deployment, contains a software defect which may prevent the deployment of frontal airbags and pre-tensioners in certain circumstances.

What are the hazards?

If the frontal airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners do not deploy when required, there is an increased risk of injury to occupants in a crash.

The ACCC says affected owners should present their vehicle to an authorised dealer or contact Performax International to arrange for repair procedure.

Those repairs will include the reprogramming of the SDM with new software that eliminates the defect.

In vehicles with any previous deployment events recorded in the SDM, the dealers will replace the existing SDM with a new SDM containing the latest software.
