The refreshed Volkswagen Amarok has landed in Australia and is ready to take the fight up to the high-flying Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.
And the Volkswagen has an advantage straight off the bat – a new 165kW/550Nm turbo-diesel V6 engine.
Beyond those normal outputs, the Volkswagen also features an over-boost function that delivers 180kW/580Nm in ten second bursts.
The V6 at this stage is only available in the upper-spec Highline and Ultimate models, though Volkswagen tell us it will be added to lower-spec Amarok’s in the future.
A 2017 V6-powered Volkswagen Amarok will set you back from $59,990.
Launching the refreshed Amarok into Australia this week, Volkswagen said the V6 engine comes about after a great deal of customer demand for greater traction at low revs.
Fuel economy from the larger engine comes in at a reasonable 7.8L/100km.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard and the 2017 Amarok retains a 3,000kg braked towing capacity (less than the Ranger’s 3,500kg and Hilux’s 3,200kg).
