Mercedes-Benz confirms G-Class Australian arrival

Benz Off-roader available in wagon, cab-chassis

Australians looking for a rough and tough vehicle can now test-drive the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Professional range.

Landing in Australia in both wagon and cab-chassis variants, prices start from $109,900 for the wagon, add an extra $10,000 for the cab-chassis.

Interestingly, Australia is the only market in the world that allows for civilian purchases of the Mercedes-Benz off-roader.

Powered by a 135kW/400Nm 2.9 litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel, the G-Class gets a five-speed auto as standard.

There’s also permanent all-wheel-drive with a 50:50 split (front/rear), diff-locks, bull bar, snorkel and 16” alloys.

Proving the model’s utilitarian roots, it also boasts:

  • Water drain plug in the floor
  • 96 litre fuel tank
  • Two 12-volt batteries
  • Tyre pressure loss warning system
  • Dirty air filter warning
  • Brake pad wear indicator for front axle brake
  • Headlight and indicator stone guards
  • Radiator and oil sump shields

Safety systems fitted include drive and passenger front airbags, anti-lock braking, Brake Assist and Electronic Stability Program (selectable on/off).

There’s four seats in the wagon, two in the cab-chassis.

While the cab-chassis boasts eight mounting points, a GVM of 4490kg and a 3.2 tonne braked towing capacity.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class wagon gets a 3,140kg towing limit.

While there’s a number of options available to buyers, including the $9,990 Edition PUR package for the wagon.

This adds a walk-on bonnet, electric door mirrors, roof rack, heat-insulated tinted glass behind the B-pillar, side running boards, a towbar, a headlamp cleaning system, heated leather seats and a radio/CD player.

mercedes-benz G-Class cab-chassis wagonIndividual options that you can tick the box for include the walk-on bonnet ($1900), heated seats ($900), tinted rear windows ($700), wire mesh partition behind the rear seats for the wagon ($1200).

There’s also the Winch Preparation Package ($1700 wagon/$1500 cab-chassis), Body Building Enhancement Package for the cab-chassis ($2500) or Electrical Enhancement Package ($4900).
