Despite being the biggest-seller of commercial vehicles globally, Mercedes-Benz reckons they can find even more customers, especially in North America.
That’s why the Germany company has just turned the first sod on a new production facility in the US this week.
The new state of the art facility in South Carolina will allow for the production of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans for the local market, from scratch.
While the Sprinter is currently assembled in the US, Mercedes-Benz currently ships partially assembled Sprinter bodies from Germany.
The new plant also allows for the production of the just launched Mercedes-Benz Metris van and for any future battery-electric versions of the Sprinter.
Mercedes-Benz currently sells about 30,000 Sprinter vans in the US annually with sales continuing to climb dramatically in recent years.
Sales of the model so far this year are up over 16%.
